Surprise win for twins

TWIN brothers Chew Lok Kin and Lok Hong provided the joy for the hosts at the third edition of Hooi Yee Sport Junior Badminton Championships at their training centre based at Sports Affairs’ 15-court badminton hall in Taman Segar Perdana, Cheras recently.

The duo, under the tutelage of former national women’s doubles and mixed doubles shuttler Chor Hooi Yee, emerged as the surprise winners of the boys’ Under-12 doubles contest.

It was not smooth sailing for Lok Kin-Lok Hong as they came from a game down against Kedah’s Abdul Jalil-Chua Soo Jeff before prevailing 13-21, 21-19, 21-12 in the final. Hooi Yee said Lok Kin-Lok Hong were lucky to force the championship match down to the wire.

Fight back: Lok Hong (front) and Lok Kin coming from a game down before they secured the win in the boysÍ Under- 12 doubles final.

“Going into the final, their opponents (Abdul Jalil-Chua Soo Jeff) were considered as the stronger pair on paper. For the brothers, they have not been training regularly throughout the year as they also had to focus on their studies and other activities.

“They only resumed training seriously a month before the recent tournament. It was a sweet return for them to secure the victory. After overcoming their opponents in a tight second game, they found their rhythm and won the decider convincingly,” she added.

The recent tournament drew almost 500 competitors in the 12 categories of the three-day meet.

The boys competed in both singles and doubles in four age-groups — Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 — while the four sections for the girls were Under-10 singles, Under-13 singles, Under-13 doubles and Under-16 singles.

Seeing double: Twin brothers Lok Hong (left) and Lok Kin celebrating their victory with Hooi Yee.

Besides the entries from the Klang Valley, junior shuttlers from Kedah, Penang, Perak, Negri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor also joined the occasion.

Hooi Yee admitted the stronger northern contenders, including entries from Penang and Kedah, added excitement and offered tougher competition in the three-day meet.

The visitors, representing several different training camps in Penang, registered a fruitful outing and went home with five titles.

It was double joy for Penang’s Lim Ming Chuen in the boys’ Under-16 category winning singles as well as pairing up with Ong Wei Khoon for the victory in the doubles.

The Penangites made a strong impression and captured the boys’ Under-10 singles and doubles as well as the girls’ Under-13 doubles.

For the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association (KLBA) Junior Closed championships scheduled at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras until today, Hooi Yee said they would be fielding six hopefuls in gauging their strength against their peers from Kuala Lumpur in all singles events.

The six promising talents are Koh Sian Hern (boys’ Under-11); Lok Kin, Lok Hong, Tai Ming Nan and Chang Hong Jack (boys’ Under-13); and Tai Jing Yi (girls’ Under-13).

Packed programme for junior shuttlers

This Article is taken from the Star Metro section of November 7, 2011.

JUNIOR shuttlers from the Hooi Yee Sport training camp will be up against a hectic competition schedule featuring several junior tournaments starting this month.

In the pre-season exercise — a build up to face the challenges next year — former national women’s doubles and mixed doubles shuttler Chor Hooi Yee was hopeful that her charges would overcome the demanding pace and prove themselves as emerging talents in their respective age-groups.

The trainees have been going through two hours of physical training on weekdays and this was increased to four hours on weekends.

“They are aware that they will need to be in good physical condition to go the full distance.

Good job: Chor (right) having a friendly chat with one of her trainees after a competition.

“We have been putting them through conditioning training to prepare them to face gruelling matches, especially towards the end of a meet. They will need to be ready for it,” said Hooi Yee.

The team, comprising 22 players aged from 10 to 16 are now taking part in the Kota Star Badminton Association junior meet in Alor Star.

The five promising players leading the pack are Koh Sian Hern (boys’ Under-10); the boys’ Under-12 trio of Chew Lok Kin, Chew Lok Hong and Ng Chen Wai; and Tai Jing Ying (girls’ Under-14).

Hooi Yee admitted her charges would be facing stiffer contests from the stronger northern contenders.

“In their previous outing at another tournament in Kuala Lumpur, the trainees have done well by advancing to the semi-finals and finals.
“They only failed to clear the tougher rounds as they faced more superior state representatives.

“It will be another interesting journey for them over the year-end school break.
“They are also teaming up with partners of similar playing ability from other states to increase their chances of winning.

“We are offering attractive incentive to spur them to rise to the challenge. The outstanding performers will be receiving equipment sponsorships as a boost for them to reach greater heights,” she added.

Currently, they have almost 100 trainees going through the paces under four trainers at the private training outfit.

They will return to provide the excitement at the third edition of Hooi Yee Sport Junior Badminton Championships at their training centre based at Sports Affairs’ 15-court badminton hall in Taman Segar Perdana, Cheras from Nov 18-20.

And the hosts are expecting more than 300 competitors to take part in the 12 categories of the three-day meet.

The boys will compete in both singles and doubles in four age-groups — Under-10, Under-12, Under-14 and Under-16 — while the four sections for the girls are Under-10 singles, Under-13 singles, Under-13 doubles and Under-16 singles.

“The number of entries is nothing to shout about at the moment.

“As usual, we are expecting a last minute rush to register before the closing date (Nov 11).

“We are confident of reaching our target in attracting another huge turnout,” said Hooi Yee.

In addition, they will also join the fray in three other tournaments in the Klang Valley before heading down south to Segamat, Johor over the year-end school break starting from mid-Nov.

IN THE absence of the superior competitors, it was a chance for unheralded junior shuttlers to showcase their potential at the Kuala Lumpur Veteran Badminton Association-Axel Open Championships at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Association hall in Cheras recently.

Tournament official P. Kantharoopan said majority of the top young trainees under the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor training programmes opted to skip the competition because of the hectic competition calendar at the state and national levels.

“The play was more than two hours behind schedule starting from the quarter-finals on the final day. We were forced to use six of the 10 courts because of the leaking roof after the afternoon down pour. But, the stadium was filled with competitors as well as spectators over the two-day meet. It took a bit of effort to get the energetic children to follow the instructions,” he added.

Untroubled victory: The men’s 30 to 40 years doubles winners Sean Wan (left) and Kong Chee Seng anticipating a return to subdue their opponents in the final.

In the boys’ section, Koh Sian Hern and Ong Jing Ning scored a double bagging both the singles and doubles in the Under-10 and Under-12 respectively.

The boys’ Under-18 singles provided a tight finale with Muhammad Shahireen subduing K. Arvind by a solitary point - winning 30-29 victory.

Meanwhile, it was a double blow for Kuala Lumpur trainee Tan Sueh Cheng when the 15-year-old stepped up to feature in the girls’ Under-18 final.

Tan went down 24-30 to Teh Kai Wen in the singles. The second blow came in the doubles when she and partner Hoo Soo Yoong suffered an agonising 29-30 defeat at the hands of Naraqilah Md Rais-Nurun Najihah.

The two-day meet drew 700 shuttlers competing in 17 categories including three separate doubles contests in the men’s veteran.

Winning combination: The partnership of Seddrik Joker and Ameer Amri emerged as the boys Under-15 champions.

In contrast, the veteran categories failed to attract the desired entries with the largest turnout of only 12 pairs in the 41- 50 category.

Kantharoopan, a former national singles shuttler, said they reduced the doubles contests for the recreational veteran players from six to three categories due to lack of entries.

“Initially, we planned to host events with five years interval in between starting from 30 years. But, the response was not that impressive,” he added.

The two other sections were 30 to 40 years and 51 to 60 years.
The 1992 Thomas Cup’s victorious side team manager Datuk Punch Gunalan and the winning team captain Razif Sidek also turned up in a show of support at the prize presentation ceremony.

KLBA Veteran Tournament 2011

On the 24th April 2011, Ms. Chor Hooi Yee is very proud of our Hooi Yee Sport students. This is so far our best result that we have sent our student for competition.

At first our aim is to let our students to gain competition experience and keep the momentum of competition. Even though it is not a school holiday, we have sent 2 students for under 18, 2 for under 15, 6 for under 12 and 2 for under 10 in only the Boys categories.

Hooi Yee Sport Chief Coach Mohd Amin, first time he is leading our students for this KLBA Veteran Tournament 2011 and the result is very promising. The participants are David Wong, Jerry Khor, Pretigesen, Pritivaraj, Lim Jarn Han, Choo Jun Bin, Ng Chen Wai, Mohd Zaki, Sam Chew, Choo Tze Lem, Yeong Chang Fei, and Koh Sian Hern.

We did not perform very well in the Under 18 and Under 15, all of them out of the competition in the first round. However, we are still proud of them because there is a number of participants from BJSS.

Our good results is from the junior categories, Boys' Under 12 singles, Ng Chen Wai did us proud by ending the competition with a semi-finalist by losing out with 29-30. He goes one step further in the Boys' Under 12 Doubles with Mohd Zaki. However, they only end up with runner-up.

We save the best for the last, Koh Sian Hern has tried many times in numbers of competition but this time, he really show his best effort by winning the Boys' Under 10 Singles. He also partner with Yeong Chang Fei to lift the Boys' Under 10 Doubles.

Ms. Chor is very satisfy with the result but she hopes all her students to train even harder to maintain or better than this performance. She also thanks Coach Amin leadership for bringing the best result from this group of Hooi Yee Sport students.
