YOUNG novice shuttlers had the opportunity to shine at a junior tournament held in conjunction with the official opening of the newly set-up Twins Sport Badminton Centre at USJ19 in Subang Jaya recently.

Former national men’s doubles shuttler Yap Yee Hup, who is the Yap Twins Sport Management chief coaching director said they did not allow the top ranked state junior shuttlers to feature in the two-day tournament to create a level playing field for other competitors.

“The eventual outcomes would be very predictable with the familiar faces and more competent players dominating their age-groups.

“We wanted other potential players to surface and challenge for the top positions. Experiencing the winning feel was a great boost to their confidence and will keep them motivated and scale for greater heights,” he added.

Putting up a fight: Chang Seau Chyi bagged both the singles and doubles.

Although the organisers called off the doubles competitions for girls’ Under-10 and girls’ Under-12 due to lack of entries, they received overwhelming response for boys’ Under-10 and boys’ Under-12 singles with about 60 competitors each in the fray.

And it was also a closely contested affair in the boys’ Under-12 singles final that went the full distance before Shazran Fadzli prevailed over his opponent Kaw Yi Suen 30-29.

Yap: We wanted other potential players to surface and challenge for the top positions

“The match could have gone either way when the score was levelled at 29-29. In the decisive rally, Shazran lost his footing when he dived down to retrieve a shot. But, his opponent made an elementary error and allowed him to walk away with the victory,” Yap recalled.

The duo of Yap Chee Yong and Chang Sheau Chyi scored a double bagging both in the singles and doubles in the boys’ Under-10 and girls’ Under-14 respectively.

Among the partners for the recent junior meet were Pro-Ace, Apacs, Pro-Tech and RCL.

Considering that they have established a 20-court rubberised hall in Subang Jaya, Yap said they will be conducting group training sessions for the youngsters on Saturday and Sunday.

“Normally, we only concentrate on providing classes with personal attention for our trainees. We host the group sessions only for programmes in schools.

“But, the parents have requested for it and we planning to assign a coach to guide a maximum of eight trainees in the two-and-half hour session,” he added.

In addition, they are also lining up men’s doubles open and men’s doubles veteran (above 45 years) scheduled in August.
